How long have you been surfing?
31 years
Describe your first board and your favourite board.
My first board was a 7'7" single fin, 23" wide - rad at the time! My favourite boards now are a 9'5" Stewart longboard and a 6'4" Spyder thruster.
Where is your favourite break ?
Crab Island, in Langland.
Take us through a wave here.
There's a steep take-off, with a hollow first section, mellowing out in the mid-section, finishing off with a racy inside. A nice long ride.
What was your most enjoyable surf contest ?
1972 World Contest
Why?
The contest was in San Diego, California and it was my first major contest. There were really good vibes through out the contest - no hassles at all! I also met all the famous names like Gerry Lopez, Corky Carroll, Jeff Hakman etc.
Who's surfing inspires you ?
Gerry Lopez, Jeff Hakman, Matt Johnson, Occy, Paul Henry Nat Young, Slater, Billy Hamilton, Laird Hamilton.
Have you ever had a bad scare whilst surfing ?
Some bad hold-downs. A memorable one being in Aberavon during winter, it was about 8' and I was under for ages.
Where would you like to see surfing going ?
Definitely away from the localism crap. Surfing is for fun and enjoyment.
And your windsurfing ? where does this fit in ?
Warm summer days - cross-shore days especially when it's about 4'-6' and nice. It fits very nicely into my garage.
